For those of you who were lucky enough to attend ENR FutureTech West in San Francisco last week, you probably met some of the 350 attendees from leading AEC firms and had discussions about innovative applications of technology to improve productivity, project delivery methods and profit in this competitive market. If you weren’t there, I’m here to fill you in with some highlights.
One of the most impactful sessions was focused around sustainability and how to innovate inside of your company. Emma Stewart, Haas School of Business, UC-Berkeley with others from McCarthy Building and Pinchot University spoke about intrapreneurship and how to drive change from within corporations. The panel discussed what it means to be an intrapreneur, and why these people are critical to the future success of the construction industry. We all stepped away with some takeaways to bring home to our organizations.
Later that morning, Karen Becker, Senior Director, AEC Marketing & Business Development at Autodesk, discussed rethinking productivity across the construction industry and the challenge of change in organizations. Autodesk has been working with the Economist Intelligence Unit to survey and interview 250 (lucky!) construction industry professionals. The participants were from all over the world, and from more than seven different AEC industry sectors. The goal of the survey was to determine the global causes of the current productivity gap in the construction industry. The report, which will be released on April 14th, highlights tools and strategies successful companies are using to respond to these challenges. And if you were really feeling the luck of the Irish, you also attended the St. Patrick’s Day-themed after-party following the conference, at the world famous Autodesk Gallery, where staff and executives networked among inspiring examples of exceptional design, engineering, construction, and manufacturing from across the globe. If you haven’t been there yet – make a trip to come check it out. Named a top destination by Wired Magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle, the gallery features more than 20 exhibits, including original works by Lego, Mercedes-Benz, Nike, and more.
