I'm excited to announce (drumroll please), the newest member of the Autodesk® Construction family, Autodesk® Point Layout is here!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When you are ready to start construction, in theory everything should fall into place. Alas, that is not the reality. Sometimes, designs are not created with constructability in mind. Other times, coordinating your sub-trades fails. Miscalculations and/or errors occur then (boom!) rework needs to be done. The next thing you know, costs are increasing and more is time needed. The project runs into delays, resulting in an unhappy owner.

Like many construction professionals, you've probably found that using a BIM process speeds up your workflow while reducing the risk of errors. But, most likely there's a critical gap: the manual process you rely on to install points in the field. What if you can get BIM data to field more easily and quickly? Imagine taking the information in your BIM model and using it for field layout. Layout doesn't have to be a science. What if you could layout with precision & speed? Then you can keep-up with tight schedules, saving time and money.

Meet Autodesk Point Layout software. Autodesk Point Layout automatically generates points from models within Autodesk® Revit®, Autodesk® AutoCAD®, and Autodesk® Navisworks® software. As you add points to the design, you embed X, Y, and Z coordinate information into your model. Each X, Y, and Z coordinate includes a unique point number and description. You can use the data you added to the model to inform the coordination process throughout the project lifecycle. Then you can export point coordinates to your compatible total station in the field so you lay out more accurate points, more quickly, reducing the risk of costly errors and delays.

Laying out points using traditional processes is time consuming and error prone. No matter how well you've coordinated the models used to design the project, there's no good way to check that points have been laid out with precision. Autodesk Point Layout software changes all that. 

Point Layout software allows people from across the project team—and from multiple disciplines—to create points from their BIM or CAD models in the office. In the field, a construction worker locates them with a robotic total station that has laser-guided, pinpoint accuracy. A single person can lay out hundreds of points in a day. You can also bring points shot in the field back into the design model, making it easier to verify construction quality and update the as-built model.

Autodesk recently acquired the technology behind Autodesk Point Layout software from Get The Point, LLC. Though Autodesk Point Layout is new to Autodesk, it's a proven technology. Get The Point, a software development firm based in Colorado, originally developed and sold total stations from Topcon. At Autodesk, we are thrilled by the real-world results customers are realizing on projects.

For example, Nick Kurth, Virtual Construction Manager, PCL Construction said, "On a recent project, PCL achieved a 27% reduction in waste, directly attributed to the use of Autodesk Point Layout solutions on concrete foundations."
